Last November we moved into a house with plenty of extra space. This was a dramatic change from our last house which was barely 1000 sq feet, 2 tiny bedrooms and no basement. There was no storage space except for the chicken coop (turned storage shed).
Our new house has 6 bedrooms, a separate office, cold storage for food, crawl space, garage and shed; plenty of space to keep everything in. In a way, we are still getting settled here. We decided that we did not want to use the extra bedrooms for storage. I would like for the rooms to remain perfectly empty or to be used for something more than storage. One has been turned into my craft room and I would love a guest room!
With that being said, it was time to put my sweetheart to work and figure out a solution. First, I want to say that I am not a pack rat in any way. In fact, I hate to store anything but there are a few things that simply need to be put somewhere. The only items that I will store are baby clothes and baby stuff (at least until we are finished having children), seasonal (decorations and clothes), my entertaining dishes, and a few memorabilia items (one storage bin!).
For light items (perfect for clothing) Eduardo created this:
Each container slides in, using the empty head space above the garage door.
A view looking directly up. A piece of white duct tape to label each one and we're set.
I know that we will have a few more storage projects in the future.

Great idea. I suppose you have to be careful not to overpack with weighty items. Our garage roof beams are already taken up with windsurf boards. One for the future perhaps.
Now, excuse me while I go and dream of six bedrooms. Some of them empty...
This is a genius idea! I love, love, love it!
Very nifty! And a great use of space! I think being in a smaller home with no storage area teaches you to not be a pack rat... at least that is my theory, because I have to go through and DI/throw away/organize stuff at least 4 times a year. Otherwise, it gets too cluttered in our house.
Nicol, brilliant..I am saving your idea. We live in a 1400 sq foot house, 3 bedrooms, no spare rooms, i use one as an office and one is a guest room since our sons are grown and gone. Being in CA we have no basements here so need to be creative. Great Idea..I also use under bed storage..and since moving here in June, more stuff to goodwill...and more..and more...
Love the idea but I have an extremely small house with no garage...just got rid of a bunch of stuff but much more that needs to go.
That is a great idea. I was going to buy those garage ceiling storage kits from Costco, but these fit your space exactly and I think they look sturdier! Great job!
I so need those. Love them!
LOVE IT! Organizing our garage is on my fall list of to-do.. I will definitely be using this idea... brilliant!
That is fantastic!!! I love it! Can he come build me some since my husband is not nearly as crafty!?

Brilliant! :)
Brilliant. Now if only I had a garage!
YOU ARE A GENIUS! Thanks for the tip; I am putting this into affect ASAP.
That is a brilliant idea! I sooo could have used that when I lived in a house. Now I have a condo, and don't have a garage. I'm definitely going to keep it in mind in case I decide to move into a house in the future. I love that it takes up space that would generally be unusable and wasted! Thanks for sharing.
fabulous idea! hmmm i wonder if i can do that to my garage...
This is genius! ...and I already have those exact bins :).
