Bending Towards the Sun

I have always loved historical books and naturally I have gravitated towards ones that take place during WWII. When I was given the opportunity to review, Bending Toward the Sun, and I knew that it would be one that I would enjoy.

The book starts out with the detailed thoughts and memories of Rita Laurie who was five-years old when she fled her home in Poland to hide from the Nazis. From 1942 to 1944, she and fourteen members of her family hid in a dark attic eating raw scraps of food. Rita watched as her brother and mother died before her eyes.

What makes this book unique is that it goes beyond the holocaust to the next generations and how it affected them. I would have never known how the next generation and beyond could be affected by something this traumatic.

A beautifully written memoir which was published September 1 2009.

Nice review! I'm getting ready to start a WW2 book myself. It's called The Search.
