I have been working on several Christmas projects that I will show over the next few weeks.
Christmas Matchbox Advent:
Supplies needed--
24 mini match boxes (minus the matches)
craft paint (and brush)
empty cereal boxes
scrapbook papers (I used a total of 2 half sheets)
hot glue
decorations (buttons, rub-ons, ribbons, etc)

To make a Christmas Matchbox Advent, purchase tons of mini match boxes and dump out matches. If anyone has any good craft ideas of suggestions to use the matches with, I would love to hear it. You will need 24 mini boxes.
Paint the inside of the boxes with craft paint. I have also seen where people put a little bit of scrapbook paper inside each box.
Glue boxes together with hot glue. Make sure to glue three boxes together and then in the above fashion.
When gluing the stacks together, open the "drawers" so they do not glue where they don't belong. Make two sets of these.
When finished gluing, this is basically what you will have.
From a thin piece of card board (cereal box works out great), measure the top of the match boxes (when you have all the boxes glues together). You will want this to be slightly larger then the box top so you have a bit of an overhang. Then cut some scrapbook paper slightly larger then the card board piece. Make two of these, one for the top and one for the bottom.
Here you can see the paper is a little larger. Next fold the paper over the cardboard and glue to secure. Glue to the top and bottom of box.
Next measure the strike parts on the box.

Cut out card board pieces and scrapbook paper to match the strike part exactly. No over hang. Glue scrapbook paper to the cardboard and glue onto each strike part.
Finally decorate, number each drawer and enjoy!
I have been asked what to put inside the advent drawers because they are so small. My intent is to put a little paper with an activity, craft, or scripture that we can do together as a family. Things like: go ice skating together, make cookies and deliver them to neighbors, decorate gingerbread houses, visit a place with lots of Christmas lights, sing Christmas songs, etc.

You are sooo creative and crafty!! Thats a great idea! Things to do as a family each day is great!!
Wow - this is amazing! I am going to have to try and copy this. I LOVE Advents.
is way cute. I picked up supplies for an advent calendar a few weeks ago. I need to get going on it! What are you going to put inside the drawers? I was thinking I'd put a treat for each of my boys inside ours.
This is so cute! And in the end, I really appreciate the advent being something other than candy and also being something you can use over and over again. Maybe I'll get adventurous and make a few of these for friends and family as well.
So cute - can't wait to see more.
That is the cutest idea! I may just have to give it a try. I just remember the advent calendars witht the really bad chocolate.
This is adorable!!!!!!! I love it!! Where to get all those match boxes though?
Very cute project! So fun!
These are so cute...
I'm sorry about your housing troubles...the right thing or one will come along...
I love your idea, it's very cute and well done :-)
Oh this is the cutest thing. I love advent calendars..this is way better. Great post!!!!
I love this idea and plan on starting it this Thanksgiving evening. I found the matches in the kitchen gadgets area at Wal-Mart, so I imagine they will be in the same area at similar type stores (for the person who was asking). Idea for those matches...how about making little fire starting bundles? You know they sell them with scented sticks (cinnamon?) and pine cones, then tie them up with ribbon and a little bundle of matches attached? Just an idea..I'll need to think about it more. Happy Thanksgiving!
Rhonda :)
I love the way yours looks. I am completely crafty-impaired but I am currently in the process of making this!!! go figure. I have all my boxes glued together (not exactly straight but...). I'm currently cutting out the cereal box and going to cut the scrapbook paper too.
I'm assuming I would use glue sticks to stick the scrapbook paper to the cardboard? Is that correct or what did you use/recommend? Also, when I glue that piece; the covered cereal boxes onto the main advent calendar, I assume I use hot glue, is that right?
Thanks--love the idea and I hope mine turns out!
Oh my goodness, this is the most clever idea! So, so cute, I have to make one of these!
great idea! I made one for myself this year :)
