Works for Me Wednesday: Kitchen Organization

Today's edition of WFMW is all on Kitchen Organization. This will be one you will want to check out over at Rocks in my Dryer!

This is one area that I feel I do really well in. It helps to have a schedule of sorts or a routine that your family follows.

A great tip is before you go shopping (that morning or the day before) clean out the fridge. Toss anything that has been in there for the past week (who knows what "funk" is growing).

My favorite kitchen tip is knowing how long nearly everything has been in my fridge! It is quick, inexpensive and you will never be trying to figure out what night last week you made meatloaf. (Oh, wait that was the week before!)

In my one drawer in the kitchen (I really have only one drawer) I have a small basket next to the flatware with a roll of masking tape and a sharpie. When I am loading up leftovers or opening a can of fruit (put into a Tupperware container) I will mark what is inside and the date. Simple! Also mark the tops of pasta sauce jars, dressings, opened packages of lunch meat, etc.

Oooh, this is a good one. I saw a tip for using masking tape to label pantry items, but taking it a step further to the fridge is fantastic. Isn't this WFMW great? It's like an intervention for those of us who are kitchen challenged. Theoretically of course. LOL! Blessings, Whitney

Wow...impressed coach looking on here - now THAT is organised! The Husbands version is 'sniff it!' to see if it's off before it gets thrown - I like your version!

I love the labeling idea, that's awesome! My favorite time to clean out the fridge is the night before garbage day. I do it so I can take what I'm throwing out to the curb with the rest of the garbage, and then clean out my tupperware with my end-of-day-load of dishes.

That is a good idea! I will have to try that one.

Ooh, I'm coveting your leftover labeling skills. And you have nice handwriting, too. :)

I kind of hate masking tape. Is that weird? I wonder if it would be too compulsive to keep a pile of file labels in the drawer with that sharpie pen, instead.

I like to clean out the fridge/cupboards in the morning before I grocery shop, so that I can make room for whatever I might bring home and also take inventory. But I've noticed that I DREAD this chore (and therefore, don't always do it) because of dealing with yucky leftovers.

So maybe trying this would help. Thanks for the tip!

We are a family of three, so we usually have a 1/2 jar this and a 1/2 bag of that left from a meal. Love the marking. I keep a sharpie in my kitche for this exact thing. I especially mark the top of jars like tomato sauce.

I love the idea of having masking tape close by. I will definitely implement this. I love your penmanship, by the way.
