Works for Me Wednesday: Bathmats

I hate bathmats! Okay, that might be a little harsh but I truly loath traditional bathmats. When you have a house of boy daycare kids, you really start to wonder what is growing on that mat. Sure you can wash your traditional bathmat until the backing starts to fall off.

Now, I love the bathmats at hotels. Like a towel, you use it once or for the day and then throw it in the wash. There isn't the chance for any funk to grow.

My mother crocheted me a set of bathmats and I love them! They are beautiful and very washable. That is important to me!

To make them my mom says, "I used Lily Sugar’n Cream which is %100 cotton and TLC Cotton Plus which is %51 cotton and %49 acrylic. The ones that I’m using are two colors of the Sugar’n Cream. Measure how big they want them to be and do a half-double crochet…nothing fancy but they work and wash up nicely. "

I like that! I'm not very crafty so I wouldn't know where to start in making one but my grandmother is so I might see if she can make me a couple. :)

That's a good idea. Right now I am using towels like hotels do. I have a regular mat at the sink and then throw a towel down on the floor during bathtime. I make sure to pick it up right after before it has a chance to get anything other than water on it. And I wash them regularly!

Great idea!

I like the towels that are used at hotles as well. There is just something about a bath mat under my feet that doesn't sit right with me. especially when I shower right after myhusband and the mat is wet. Ugh!

I have considered crocheting some mats but I was wondering if the water would soak through and wet the floor since there is no rubber backing?

I was also trying to figure out what material I could use as backing.

I am thinking something like the rubber drawer liner material.

So does the floor get wet and does the mat slip?

Now I have a new crochet project to think about! I love Sugar & Cream yarn and make dish cloths out of it all the time. I never thought to do up a bathmat! The best part is that you can throw it in the wash!

I was just whining this morning about having to share a bathroom with three boys and the nasty wet towel on the floor. What are the dimensions of your mats?

That is a fantastic idea! Thanks!

To answer a few questions:

My mat is 18x24. It is a tiny bathroom and simply no room for anything longer. You can make the mat as long or as wide as you need to. That is the nice thing about crocheting it yourself.

With it getting wet. I like to dry myself off before I set on the mat so I really haven't had the problem with the floor getting wet under it. After my dh used it this morning, the tile floor is not wet. It does a really good job and soaking everything up. Now if you were to step out completely wet, then yes it probably would seep through.

I do not have a backing on this mat and feel that I do not need one. I don't know what I would suggest as a backing if you needed one.

Even though it doesn't have a backing, I haven't had the problem of the mat moving around. It is meant to be there after I shower and then tossed into the wash.

I am with you on the loath of bath mats. I actually got to the point I just took them out and use a dark towel folded into fourths to absorb the water and throwing it in the wash after everyone's bath. Bath mats don't get clean and after a few washes are in pieces.

I am novice crocheter and I love any new ideas. Thanks. I think I even have some of that yarn.

Nicol,

Love this post!! I'm a novice crocheter and can't wait to try this! I have one (very stupid) question, though. Does your mother use both yarns at the same time, or does she use one yarn on one row and the other yarn on the next row? I've only used one yarn at a time and am curious.

Heather,

Yes, she uses both yarns at the same time.

Enjoy!
